You and your child have different needs
It's a matter of weight and the amount of use it will get. Two adults sleeping in a mattress every night have different support and comfort requirements than a child.
It's vital that your child sleeps on a surface that provides adequate support through his/hers growing years. A mistake many parents make is buying inexpensive mattresses for the kids that is only designed to last five years when they will be sleeping on it for ten. If anything, support is more critical for a child's growing body, including proper spinal formation. Does the child need a $2,000 queen size yet? Probably not. Should you choose a $100.00 "used" set out of a classified ads? Absolutely not. Your decision now will affect the health of his/her back for the rest of their life! It's important to note that a majority of young people do not like stiff mattresses.
